This edition of the History of the Chartist Movement has been thoroughly revised and in many parts rewritten. It is to be regretted that the able author of the work, Mr. R. G. Gammage, did not live to perform this necessary revision, as the information he possessed would have added greatly to the value of the book. He died at Northampton in 1888, whither he had retired after spending upwards of thirty years of his later life as a medical practitioner in Sunderland.

For the valuable index which appears now for the first time, the publishers are indebted to the industry and ability of Mr. Thomas Marshall, Solicitor, Sunderland.

All the very rare portraits and views have been collected (some by loan,) from various sources, not without considerable difficulty.
