James First of England, and Sixth of Scotland, son of Mary, Queen of Scots, and Henry Stuart, Earl of Darnley, was the first English king of the Stuart race. Soon after his accession a plot was formed by the Catholics for blowing up the parliament-house with gunpowder, at the opening of parliament, when the King, Lords, and Commons, together with the Queen, and Prince of Wales were assembled.
