Now the cobler thought every day a month till he had been at court to ſee his new acquaint- unce, and was much troubled how he ſhould get leave of his wife Joan, for he could not go without her knowledge, becauſe he ruſolved to sake him- ſelf fine as he could, and the wife always kept the key of his holyday clothes. Whereupon, one evening, as they ſat at ſapper, finding h r in n very good humour, he began to open his mind to her, telling her the whole ſtory of their acquintance and repeating over and over orain that, I was the honeteit fellow that ever ' I met with Husband, quoth ſhe, becauſe you ' have been ſo ingenious as to tell me the whole ' truth I will give you leave to make a holyday ' for this once : You ſhall go to court, and I will ' make you as fine as I can.' So it was agreed that he ſhould go the next day, whereupon Joan roſe betimes the next morning to brußt up her huisand's holiday clothts, and to make him as fnug as the could, wolled and ironed the laced band and made his thoes fline thut he might fee his ince in them; having one this, he made her bu aud put off his that, then the wathed him with warm water from lead to foot, potting on him a clean dut, afterwards fedrelle him in his holyday cloches, pinning his lndband in prime.
