The material contained in this book has been collected by me personally during many years of my active professional life. It has been my good fortune to meet personally and converse with the chiefs of police and the most famous detectives in all the great cities of the world. The work of collecting and arranging this material and writing the different chapters has occupied many a leisure hour.
