PREFACE

In preparing the present work the compiler wishes to give full credit to those books which she has had occasion to use as authorities for the general principles and laws of the game and for such of its history as the limited space of the Introduction permitted. The list is as follows: “The Chess-Player’s Handbook,” by Howard Staunton; “Chess,” by E. F. Green; “The Principles of Chess in Theory and Practice,” and “The Art of Chess,” by James Mason; “The American Cyclopædia,” and “The Life of Philidor,” by George Allen.
