PREFACE.

This little book contains the substance of the contributions under the title of “Irish Made Easy” which appeared in the Irish Packet during the past four months. For the past year or two the movement for the simplification of Irish spelling has been gathering strength, and at the beginning of the present year & scheme was on foot for the establishment of a journal to advocate reform. Before that scheme had fully matured the editor of the Irish Packet offered to those interested in reform an opportunity of placing their views before the public. That offer was readily accepted, and on the 4th April the first contribution, which is now quoted in full as an introduction to this book, was published. There is nothing to add to the case for reform as stated in that contribution. It may, however, be stated that the publication of “Irish Made Easy” in the Irish Packet has disclosed the existence of widespread dissatisfaction with the current system of spelling.
