The figure of an Egyptian Scarabæus (Ateuchus sacer) is placed at the commencement, and that of a Moth (Saturnia Pyri) at the end of the above inscription.

On the left face of the obelisk are the following words:—

And on the right:—

The bronze bust, which is of the natural size, has the name Latreille carved on its base. On one of

  1. It is not a little singular that an error in date should occur in such circumstances. The work mentioned was published in 1796. As the above inscription, however, is copied, not from the monument itself, but from the Ann. of the Ent. Soc. of France, the error may be typographical, as that work, unlike French scientific publications in general, is far from being accurately printed.
