time to time when making extracts from it. In some instances, however, Editors of newspapers have reproduced records in Notable Australians without having the grace or sense of honour to tell their readers whence they obtained the biographical facts. They allowed the unsuspecting public to infer that these particulars were of the newspapers' own compiling, and consequently received credit to which they were not entitled. In such instances, where my attention has been directed to the plagiarism, the newspaper proprietors have been warned not to continue the practice. These newspapers, I am pleased to add, have been the rare exceptions to the rule adopted by the best journals to always fully acknowledge my biographical dictionary as the source of substantial extracts.
It should be clearly understood that this work is copyright, and that the biographical records are compiled from data obtained by me at first-hand as the result of my own enterprise and expense, independently altogether of previously existing printed records. The only condition therefore on which proprietors and editors of public newspapers and magazines may publish extracts or material portions of records appearing in this volume is that in the matter they print they fairly acknowledge Johns's Notable Australians and Who is Who in Australasia as their source and original. With such acknowledgment full quotation and use by newspapers and magazines will not be objected to. As regards publication other than in a newspaper or magazine, no extract from my book may be published without my express permission; and any person forwarding extracts from this volume for publication in a manner not authorized, as well as the actual printer and publisher of such extracts, will render himself liable to legal proceedings.
