Francis Edward, mem- ber of the first House of Representatives for Lang (N.S.W.) 1901-3; b. Sydney, 1868. Was sometime M.L.A. for Marrickville, and one of the Hon. Secretaries of the United Federal Executive, and Hon. Secretary of N.S.W. division of Austn. Freetrade and Li- beral Assn. prior to federal union of the Austn. colonies. Is a Fellow of the Sydney Institute of Accountants. McLEAN, Hon.George, Member of the Legislative Council of New Zealand; b. at Elgin, Scotland, in 1834, s. of James McLean. He arrived in Victoria in the fifties, was connected with the Oriental Bank Corporation, and afterwards proceeded to New Zealand as manager of the Dunedin branch of the Bank of New Zealand. Enter- ed into commercial pursuits, and for many years represented Waikouaiti in the House of Representatives. In December 1881, he was appointed to the Legislative Council. From July to September 1876, was Commis- sioner of Customs in the Vogel Ministry, then until October 1877, Postmaster- General in the Atkinson Ministry, and again in 1884, Commissioner of Trade and Customs in the At- kinson Government. He is a member of the University Council. VAOUBOD, William, Managing Director of The Bulletin Newspaper Co. Ltd; b. London, 1850. He came to Australia when a boy, studied art, and developed into a por- trait and animal painter and illustrator In many Sydney journals. He was the first ar- tist engaged on the staff of the Picturesque Atlas Co., and left to become Manager of The Bulletin, of which paper he was one of the founders.
