Wlinnru, Alexander Koisborgb, .*ew Zealand merchant and bibliophile; o. at Wellington, N.Z., Sept. 14, 1868, s. of Walter Turnbull (who arrived in the colony in 1857, was member of the Provin- cial Council at Wellington, and founded the firm of W. * G. Turnbull), and erf. at Dulwich College, England, and Paris. He is a partner in W. 6 G. Turnbull, Welling- ton, and is a well-known book collector. He possesses a notable Australasian collec- tion. Arrived in Aust. in 1874. Was engaged at Govt. Botanic Gardens Brisbane 1874-9, Curator of the Queensland Ac- climatisation Society's Gardens, and Bo- tanist to the Department of Agriculture New South Wales, and is member of the Council of the Linnean Society of N.S.W. Awarded seven medals and four di- plomas for Australian and exotic economic botany, travelled more than 50,000 miles in Aust., and botaniscd largely in all the States of the Commonwealth. Was the first to popularise Australian economic botany by illustrations and descriptions in the public press, snd the first to make botanical surveys, denned by latitude and longitude, of important sections of Austra- lia. Is Author of numerous botanical and cognate works, many of which have been published under the authority of the Govern- ments of Queensland, New South Wales, and Western Australia. Much of his botanical work has been republished by Governments in other countries, m. Is an attorney and solicitor of the Supremo Court of Yic. Was a member of St. Xilda City Council 1887-1900, and Mayor 1888, M.L.A. for St Kilda 1889-1901, Commis- sioner of Trade and Customs and Minister of Health 1891-2, and also Solicitor-General until 1898 in Munro and Shiels Govts., Pre- mier and Treasurer Sept. 1894-Deo. 1899, Minister for Defence 1894-5, and Premier, and Treasurer 1900-Feb. 1901, when he retired from the State Legislature to enter the Commonwealth Parlt. Took a prominent part in the movement for Austn. federal union, was member of the National Conven- tion which framed the Commonwealth Con- stitution 1897-8, delegate to the Federal Council of A'asia 1895-7, and President 1899. Returned to the first House of Representa- tives for Balaclava Mar. 1901, and re-elected Dec 1908, Treasurer in the first Federal Ministry Jan. 1901-Sept. 1908, and conti- nued in office until Apr. 1904; again Trea- surer 1904-5.
