took his LL.B. degree in 1891. He was admitted a banister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of New Zealand in 1884, and has practiced at Auckland since 1887. In 1907 he was appointed K.C. From 1902 to 1905 he sat in the House of Representatives for Auckland city and since for Auckland East, and was Chaireman of the Select Parliamentary committee on Education 1902-5. He has been a member of Auckland University College Council since 1892, an Fellow of the Senate of New Zealand University since 1903, and was sometime Law Examiner in N.Z. University. BATXJKW, Arthur Albert Dawson, poet, novelist, critic; 6. Leeds, Yorkshire, Eng., Mar. 20, 1865, a. of Charles Henry Bayldon (name originally Beldon, changed to Bayldon in the sixteenth century). At Adelaide University in 1879 he was the first to win the South Australian Scholarship, and proceeded in 1880 to University College, London (Gil- christ Engineering Scholarship, B.Sc. in Pure Science). He was assistant to Profes- sor Kennedy, F.R.8., and a demonstrator la the Engineering Laboratory at University College, London, 1884-7, was the first Pro- fesor of Applied Mechanics and Engineering at the Heriot Watt College, Edinburgh, 1887-9, and Professor of Engineering in suc- cession to Professor Kennedy at University College, London, 1889-1901. Since 1887 he has also been actively engaged in profes- sional practice as a consulting engineer, and has conducted considerable original research work, has been a frequent contributor to technical journals, written articles on engi- neering matters for Chambers's Encyclopae- dia, and contributed a number of the lives of engineers for the Dictionary of National Bio- graphy. He undertook for the Clarendon Press the English translation of the late Professor Cremona's works on Graphical Cal- culus and Graphical Statics (1888). and is writing an advanced text book on the Strength of Materials.
