The Pretident objected to the Committee of Papers because he thought they were more likely to have a leaning in favor of Sanskrlt. On taking the votes on the question by shew of hands the amendment was lost and the original motion carried by a majority, the Hattie of Bhbua RAM CosnyL SENA being added to the committee on the motion of Mr. hARE.. I am directed by the Honorable the Deputy Governor of Bengal to acknowledge the receipt of your letter datedthe Itb instant with its enclosure, and in reply to state that under the circumstances represented his honor the Deputy Governor is led to believe that he shall onli’ conform to the wishes of the honorable the Court of Directors by giving to their Or. dera on the subject of Oriental Publications so much retrospective effect as shall relieve the Society from the debt it has incurred in completing the publication of the wdrks made over to it by Government. A Treasury order will accordingly be issued in favor of the Sub—Treasurer to enable him to pay to your receipt, on a bill to be drawn in the name of the Asiatic Society,Ibe sum of 2,500 Company’s rupees, which appears to be the amonni advanced by the Society as stated in Pars. S of your letter under reply. . The completion of the remaining volume of the Mnhhbhirata will fall within the natural appropriation of the monthly allowance prospectively assigned. I remain. &c. H.
