The Council adjourned.
The president laid before the Council the report of the quartermaster-general of the territory of Michigan, in obedience to the resolution of the 10th instant, in relation to the number and condition of all the arms belonging to the territory.
The president also announced, that he had, this day, laid before the Governor, for his approbation, the "Act to create and establish a common school fund."
Mr. Hascall presented an account of S. Sherwood against the Legislative Council.
Mr. Renwick presented an account of A. S. Dygert against the Council, and also an account of J. B. Piquette.
The foregoing accounts were severally referred to the committee on expenditures.
On motion of Mr. Farnsworth,
Resolved, That the committee on territorial affairs inquire into the expediency of organizing township 2 south, range 8 east, in the county of Wayne, and report by bill or otherwise.
On motion of Mr. Satterlee,
Resolved, That the committee on the judiciary inquire into the expediency of passing a law for the appointment of a surrogate court in each of the several counties in the territory, and to define their powers and duties; and also of abolishing the probate system.
On motion of Mr. Bacon,
Resolved, That the committee on internal improvement inquire into the expediency of authorizing, by law, alterations to be made in the territorial roads.
In pursuance of notice, Mr. Martin asked and obtained leave to introduce a bill to appropriate the taxes hereafter to be levied on non-resident lands to the construction and repair of roads.
Messrs. Martin, Hascall, and Farnsworth were appointed the committee to prepare the said bill.
Mr. Britain submitted the following resolution:
Resolved, That before the question shall be taken on motion to go into committee of the whole on any bill, the title of said bill shall be distinctly stated to the Council by the president.
The said resolution was disagreed to.
On motion of Mr. Satterlee, the Council proceeded to the consideration of the resolution submitted by him yesterday, in relation to an inquiry into the expediency of increasing the number of representatives in the Legislative Council.
The resolution was adopted, and referred to a select committee, consisting of Messrs. Satterlee, Farnsworth and Doty.
