grade of Major, was entrusted with the command of a small vessel, the crew of which was composed of galley-slaves and bandits, and distinguished himself in several actions. Relating his exploits, he told an anecdote, which will show what is the idea of honour among the Russians. “In the battle of Swenske Sound,” said he, “I was attacked by two Swedish galleys. After a vigorous defence, perceiving that it would be impossible to resist any longer, I struck my flag, as if I intended to surrender, and as soon as the Swedes, not suspecting any danger, approached my vessel to capture it, I gave them a broadside of grape-shot, which killed many of their crew; I repeated this stratagem twice; they would, however, have infallibly sunk me, if a west wind fortunately had not risen, which, as my vessel was a faster sailer, soon enabled me to escape them.” Titow greatly admired this trait of presence of mind and finesse.
