5 per cent. rate of interest is 12 lacs of rupees. The whole amount at present available for all departments is only about 7+1/2 lacs. Hence for each and every purpose, the needed endowment is as yet only in its beginning; and further appeal to the generosity of donors, both great and small, is thus urgently required.
Mode of Development of the Institute.
The above scheme of six complete Research Departments is thus for gradual accomplishment throughout the coming years. This year's Transactions will contain papers in two of these departments, and next year's volumes will include papers in more.
Hence instead of the complete development of any one or two departments to the exclusion of others, all are more or less in way of progress, even active initiative, despite inadequate resources. Though some donations and endowments are already allocated to specific departments—a mode of assistance which is much appreciated—a majority are given to be employed year by year within the discretion of the Director and Board of Managers towards such general or special developments as are, or may be from time to time, most practicable and fruitful.
In summary then, while the ultimate endowment aimed at is no less than 612 lacs, the amount at present aimed at, to provide the growing requirements of the next three years 1919-21, is estimated at about one-third of the above amount, say 24 lacs, of which only 7+1/2 lacs are as yet available.
