The child listened to these words without making any reply, but a few moments after, she invited Lapa aside, and said to her with as much gravity as humility, "Dear mother, whenever I commit any fault, or execute your order badly, punish me, beat me even if you will, to force me to do my duty better, but, I entreat you, never to curse any one on my account, for it is unbecoming your years, and gives me great pain. " The mother was greatly surprised at this lesson from her child, and more edified than surprised when she discovered that she had remained to offer the Holy Sacrifice, instead of loitering by the way as she had hastily judged.
