PREFACE

This work is practically an enlarged edition of the Instructions for the Prevention of Malarial Fever, written by me some years ago, and published by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. As many thousand copies of that little book were disposed of, it evidently met a public requirement; and I am, therefore, encouraged to believe that a further exposition of the subject, including notes regarding the treatment of the disease as well as its prevention, will be not inacceptable to those who are called upon to reside in malarious countries.

The part dealing with Prevention is written chiefly for the use of the individual. Measures for the pre- vention of malaria on a large scale, as for instance by municipalities, are discussed in my work on Mosquito Brigades.

It should be added that most of the principles given here for the prevention of Malarial Fever will suffice for that of Yellow Fever and Elephantiasis- diseases which are communicated in the same manner.
