PREFACE TO THE EIGHTH EDITION.

IN preparing this new edition of my husbands Manual, I have been guided by the principles described in the preface to the seventh edition. I have relied on the statistics to be found in the Statesman's Year Book and in the Statistical Abstract. I have also to acknowledge with gratitude assistance and information most courteously extended to me by Lord Monteagle, Mr. Alfred Booth of Liverpool, and by the Secretaries of Rochdale Equitable Pioneers’ Society, the Wholesale Cooperative Society, and the United Kingdom Alliance.

All new matter contained either in the text or in the notes of the editions, 1888 and 1907, have been enclosed in square brackets.

MILLICENT GARRETT FAWCETT.

London, 1907.
