There is some doubt, among antiquarians, who was the author of this book. Some affirm that it was written by Bracton, others that it is the production of John Le Breton, who was Bishop of Hereford, or John Breton, one of the Judges of 1 Edw. II. The author represents Edward I. as writing the book, and declaring it to his subjects. Whoever the author may be, it is little else than an abridgment of Bracton, with the additions of alterations in the law subsequent to the time of Bracton. The first edition was printed by Redman, 12mo. n. d. ; the 2d ed., 12mo., London, 1610, was edited by Edmund Wingate, who made many cor- rections of the text, and inserted a chapter that was omitted in the first edition ; 3d ed. by R. Kelham, who translated Britton from the old Nor- man dialect, and illustrated the maxims of this authoritative book by valuable notes, and references to ancient records. 27 L. M. 358 ; 2 Reeves' Eng.
