What Lord Coke accomplished for the Tenures of Little- ton, Valin did for the Ordonnance, and his Commentary is of equal authority with the text. He collected, with great judgment, from all sources, both ancient and modern, foreign and domestic, whatever would illustrate the Ordonnance, and added his own observations, distinguished for their comprehensiveness, learning and thought. Valin is constantly quoted in the Admiralty Courts of both England and America, and Cases have been repeatedly decided upon his authority. A modern French edition of the Ordonnance, will be found in Pardessus' Collection, and English trans- lations in the Sea Laws, and as an Appendix to Peters' Mmirally Decisions ; besides which, there is a French edition by Becanne, with references to the Code de Commerce.
