Having finished his course of literary and theological study at the College of Edinburgh; and at the Divinity Hall, under the Rev. Mr. Brown and Dr. Lawson, he was licensed to preach the gospel by the Associate Presbytery of Edinburgh. After exercising his gifts for a short time in the vacancies, under the inspection of the Associate Synod, he received an unanimous Call from the Associate Congregation of Old Cumnock, [vacant in consequence of the translation of the Rev. Mr. (now Dr.) Hall to Edinburgh.] to the pastoral inspection of which, after going through the usual course of trials, he was solemnly
