Char. Corolla 5partita, reflexa.

Corona summo tubo filamentorum imposita, 5phylla, foliolis cncullatis, e fun do exserentibus processuni aversum corniformem.

Anthem membrana terminate.

MasscB pollinis compressae, apice attenuato affixa3, pen- dulae.

Stigma depressum, muticum.

Folliculi heves. Semina comosa. 37] Habitus. Herbte erectae. Folia opposita, nunc alterna! vel verticillata. Umbel/a? interpetiolares.

Patria. America Septentrionalis.

Obs. The species of this genus which I have examined, are A. Syriaca, (most improperly so called, as it is a native of North America only), amcena, purpurascens, variegata, curassavica, nivea, elevata, parcijlora, incarnata, decumbent, verticillata, tuberosa, of Willdenow's Spec. Plant., and some unpublished species in the Banksian Herbarium ; and there can be little doubt that A. pulchra, cilrifolia, Mexicana, linaria, rubra, and all the species of Michaux, belong to it.

Anther ce membrana terminatae.

Massct pollinis compressae, apice attenuato afflxse, pen- dulse.

Stigma depressum, muticum.

Folliculi ventricosi, spinis innocuis echinati.

Semina comosa.
