William Hoste, 1st Baronet.
The rank of Captain- Lieutenant was given
-to the senior Lieutenant in a regiment, but
carried no extra pay with it. See the note
on it by MB. R. PIEBPOINT at 11 S. xi. 187.
The word " Cornet," meaning a rank
in the Army, is derived from " cornet,"
the standard of a troop of cavalry. In early
days the Captain of every troop of cavalry
had his own cornet or standard, which was
carried by the junior officer of the troop,
who was hence called Cornet.
The analogy is much the same as the
" drums and fifes " of a regiment, really
meaning the drummers and fifers, or
" cover " at cricket, for the man who is
fielding at cover-point.
" The King's own Regiment of Horse," which comes next (p. 6), with the same establishment of officers as the preceding regiment, was formed in 1685, and is now designated the " 1st (King's) Dragoon Guards."
