Then bringing forth my heart to view,
Too well what s hidden there he knew,
He show d me ten times worse within.

4 Tis all too true, my soul replied,
But I remember Jesus died,
And now he fills a throne of grace ;
I ll go, as I have done before,
His mercy I may still implore;
I have his promise " Seek my face.

5 But as when sudden fogs arise
The trees and hills, the sun and skies,
Are all at once conceal d from view ;
So clouds of horror, black as night,
By Satan raised, hid from my sight
The throne of grace and promise too.

6 Then, while beset with guilt and fear,.
He tried to urge me to despair,
He tried and he almost prcvail'd :
But Jesus by a heavenly ray
Drove clouds and guilt and fear away,
And all the tempter s malice fail'd.

1 WHEN darkness long has veil d my mind.
And smiling day once more appears,
Then, my Redeemer, then I find
The folly of my doubts and fears.

2 Straight I upbraid my wand ring heart,
And blush that I should ever be
Thus prone to act so base a part,
Or harbour one hard thought of thee.

3 Oh ! let me then at length be taught
What I am still so slow to learn :
That God is love and changes not,
Nor knows the shadow of a turn.

4 Sweet truth, and easy to repeat !
But when my faith is sharply tried,
