AS the Quirinal Palace contains only one chapel, the Paolina, this has to be arranged so as to serve the Cardinals both for mass and voting. The balloting accordingly takes place in the presbytery, in front of the altar, the floor of which, covered with a green carpet, is brought on a level with the base of the pontifical throne, which is removed; while on the Gospel side of the altar a chair is put for the new Pope from which to receive the adoration of the Cardinals immediately after election. Inside the railing of the presbytery are the seats of the Cardinals, each with a canopy of green for those of older date, and of violet for those created by the late Pope. As soon as an election has taken place, these are lowered; the canopy over the new Pope remaining alone aloft.
