84 T. C. ELLIOTT sented to show the way his people had traveled, from the time he could remember and earlier. This was the road used by the Cayuses on their way to the buffalo country ; for the plains and valleys of Southern Idaho and Oregon and Northern Utah and Nevada were once the range of the buffalo. This was the war track connecting the Snake with the Nez Perces nations, for it was the nature of the Indian to maraud. With the ad- vent of the white man came commerce, then habitation here and there, and progress step by step to the civilization of the present day. Such centenaries as this, .which recall the deeds and men of former years, fitly contribute to the culture of the present.
