NEWS AND COMMENT

OREGON HISTORICAL SOCIETY, ANNUAL MEETING

The annual meeting of the Oregon Historical Society was held October 26, 1936, at the rooms of the society, Portland. The secretary reported on the activities of the society during the past year. Among the important accessions were a collection of Indian baskets, presented by Miss Isabella Gauld; copies of miniatures of Dr. McLoughlin and his brother, David, from Mr. Richard Montgomery; an almost complete file of the Oregon Free Press, 1848, which was completed with photostats from the New York Historical Society. Much needed indexing has been done with the assistance of WPA funds. A card catalogue of the provisional and territorial government documents is almost finished; the Indian War pension papers have been catalogued and filed. The membership report showed 348 paying members and 93 exchanges, a total of 441. Nineteen new members were added and 34 discontinued. A committee was appointed to prepare resolutions upon the death of Mrs. Harriet McArthur, one of the organizers of the society, and Lawrence A. McNary, a director at the time of his death. Dr. R. C. Clark told of his experiences while working in the archives of the Hudson's Bay Company, London, during the past summer. The following officers were elected: Charles H. Carey, president; B. B. Beekman, vice president; Lewis A. McArthur, secretary; E. B. MacNaughton, treasurer. Directors elected for the next four years: Lewis A. McArthur, Omar C. Spencer, Fred S. Perrine, Alfred Powers. The treasurer's report was as follows:
