838 OUR HYMNS:

Year ; Thoughts in Verse for the Sundays and Holydays through out the Year," published in 1827. This work has gone through eighty editions, and his church at Hursley is said to have been rebuilt out of the profits of it. Several hymns in the " New Congregational Hymn Book" are parts of hymns in the " Christian Year." Keble s hymns are distinguished for their great refinement of taste, their word-painting, and graceful allu sions to the charms of nature, and for a pleasing sentiment, which jnly offends when it threatens to degenerate into a mere senti- mentalism ; and the spiritual find in some of his verses a happy vein of piety and the highest doctrines applied to the duties of daily life. Members of other Christian communities find here and there verses in which the Church to which the author belongs, and its festivals, are made more prominent than they approve ; but all Christians find much in Keble s hymns to enjoy and commend.
