Dr. Bonar is also the editor of several works by other writers, and of numerous useful tracts. He is a contributor to magazines, and is known as editor of the "Journal of Prophecy," and of the " Christian Treasury."

Dr. Bonar is also very favourably known as a religious poet and hymn-writer. He has contributed to hymnology, " The New Jerusalem ; a Hymn of the Olden Time," 1852. An account of the various poetical renderings of the well-known hymn, " mother, dear Jerusalem." His " Hymns of Faith and Hope " appeared in 1857. The preface is dated, " Kelso, December 19th, 1856." It explains that many of the pieces had appeared in journals and elsewhere during the previous twelve years. This work had reached an eighth edition in 1862. The second series of " Hymns of Faith and Hope" was published in 1861. His three hymns in the " New Congregational Hymn Book," Nos. 574, 814, and 928, are taken from the first series of " Hymns of Faith and Hope ;" the last mentioned

" Come, Lord, and tarry not," No. 928,

is only part of the original hymn, which consists of fourteen verses. It is suggestive of the author s views on the subject of the second coming of Christ, upon which he has written much.

BORN 1808.

THIS favourite American sacred poet is an eminent Congregational minister at Albany, New York. Born in Rhode Island, he went at the age of thirteen to Boston, where he spent part of his time at school, and part as a clerk in a draper s shop. After a time he was brought under religious impressions, and became a member of the Park Street Congregational Church, at that time under the care of Dr.S. E . Dwight, son of President Dwight.
