Fig, 23. Head of Statue of King Khafre, Builder of the Second Pyramid of Gizeh (Twenty-ninth Century b.c.) The king wears a linen headdress, and a false beard hanging from his ■chin. A falcon, symbol of the king (see Fig. 12), hovers protectingly over his head. The material is diorite, a stone so intensely hard that no modern sculptor would try to use it. Found in Khafre's valley temple by the Sphinx at Gizeh (Plate I)
