§ 5. Influence of Temperature on the Velocity of the Explosion- Wave.

Berthelot has published 110 experiments on the influence of initial temperature on the explosion-wave; but, if the wave is propagated in a manner analogous to a sound wave, it might be anticipated that an increase in the initial temperature of the gases would increase the velocity. The reverse effect is found in the explosion of hydrogen and oxygen. Experiments made at 10° C. and 100° C. showed a small, but distinct, lowering of the rate at the higher temperature. The experiments were made alternately at the high and low temperature, in order to eliminate the effect which might be produced by any mistake in the mixture or error in the chronograph.
