Upon its breast the star he placed,
          The star of liberty:
Bright, and more bright the meteor blazed,
The lesser planets stood amazed,
Astonished mortals, wondering, gazed,
          Looking on fearfully.
That star shines brightly to this day,
On thy calm breast, America!
