appearance of drops of water enclosed within it.[1] These are the principal varieties; but the natives, with a keen eye for subtleties of colour and quality, have invented names, such as tongarewa, totoeka, korito, kutukutu, tuapaka and many others for the different shades that are met with. Kohuwai, the name of a moss-like water plant, is a term that is applied to nephrite in which similar markings appear.
