Emperor also gave him a letter addressed to the Prince Regent of Great Britain, recommending him for promotion; and nothing could possibly exceed the kind reception he met with during a fortnight’s sojourn, by express invitation, at St. Petersburg.

We next find the Niobe proceeding to Halifax, with Commodore Owen, and reinforcements for the shipping on the Canadian lakes. She afterwards visited Bermuda, on her way to the West Indies; and formed part of the squadron under Sir Philip C. Durham, at the reduction of Guadaloupe, in 1815. Whilst employed at the Leeward Islands, Captain Deacon had two very severe attacks of yellow fever. He paid off the Niobe, at Woolwich, in the spring of 1816; and obtained post rank, April 2, 1817.

Second son of the late Sir Michael Shaw Stewart, Bart, of Blackball, Renfrewshire, N.B.

This officer served part of his time, as midshipman, under Lord Cochrane, in the Imperieuse frigate, and was in one of her boats at the attack of Arcasson, Jan. 7, 18O7. In the following year, he assisted at the destruction of several newly constructed semaphoric telegraphs, fourteen guard-houses, a battery, and a strong tower, on the southern coast of France[1]. He also served on shore, at the defence of Rosas, in Dec. 1808[2].

Mr. Stewart passed his examination, at Portsmouth, in July 1811; obtained a commission on the 1st of the ensuing month ; became flag-lieutenant to Lord Keith early in 1813; was made commander, Aug. 13, 1814; appointed to the Shark, receiving-ship at Jamaica, Jan. 18, 1815; to the Royalist brig,
