' their Lottery-Tickets in due Time, or have loft Exchequer-Bills, or Lottery-Tickets ; and for borrowing Money ' upon Stock (Part of the Capital of the South Sea Company) for the Ufe of the Publick' : It was enafted,
- That there fliould be raiied, levied, colle£ted and paid, to and for the Ufe of her Majefty, her Heirs and
- Siicceffors, for, and upon all chequered and ftriped Linens, and upon all Linens printed, painted, ftained or
- dyed, after the Manufadlure, or in the Thread and Yarn before the Manufa£ture, in any Foreign Parts
' which at any Time or Times, within or during the Term of thirty-two Years, to be reckoned from the ' twentieth Day of fuly ont thoufand feven hundred and twelve, fhould be imported or brought into the ' Kingdom of Great Britain, and might lawfully be ufed or worn there (over and above all other Cuftoms, ' Subftdies and Duties impofed upon, or payable for the fame) a Duty of fifteen Pounds for every one •' hundred Pounds of the true and real Value thereof, to be paid by the Importers refpefiively ; and alfo, •' that all and every Printers, Painters, Stainers, Dyers, Drapers, Mercers, Upholders, Traders and Dealers ■' refpeftively, having on the faid twentieth Day of July one thoufand feven hundred and twelve, in his, her ' or their Cuftody or Pofleflion, or in the Cuftody or Poffeffion of any other Perfon or Perfons, for his, her,
- or their Ufe, Benefit or Account, any Stock or Quantity of fuch chequered or ftriped Linens, or of fuch
' printed, painted, ftained or dyed Silks, Callicoes, Linens, or fuch Stuffs, as aforefaid, being for Sale •" either Wholefale or Retail, fhould yield and pay to her Majefty for the fame, fo much Money as one ' Half-Part of the Rates and Duties by the faid AcS impofed on the like refpedlive Commodities, after the Commencement of the faid Aft, fhould amount unto; the faid Half-Part of the faid Stocks to be paid -' within three Months after the faid twentieth Day of July aforefaid ; And whereas fome Doubts have -' arifen whether Lawns, Linens ftriped or chequered, being all white, and Neckcloths having Stripes at ' the End only ; as alfo Barras ftriped or chequered, and Buckrams are liable by the faid Aft to the above mentioned Duties;' Be it enafted and declared by the Queen's moft Excellent R4ajefty, by and with the Advice and Confent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this prefent Parliament af- fembled, and by the Authority of the fame. H E R E A S by an Aft made in the tenth Year of her Majefty's Reign, intituled, An A£i to prevent _ Ahufes in making Linen Cloth, and regulating the Lengths, Breadths, and equal Sorting tf Tarn for ' each Piece made in Scotland, and for whitening the fame ; and forafmuch as there was no P/ovifion made ' in the faid Aft for regulating the Lengths, Breadths, and equal Sorting of Yarn for Dornick or Towelling, ' or for Quarter- Pieces of white Linen Cloth ;' For Remedy whereof.
