An Act for the better Regulation and Government of Pilots licenfed by the Corporation of Trinity Hcufe of Deptford Strond in the County of Kent, and to prevent Mifchiefs and Annoyances upon the River of Thames below London Bridge. ' XTTHEREAS the Mailer, Wardens and Affiftants of the Guild, Fraternity or Brotherhood of the ' yy rood glorious and undivided Trinity, and of Saint Clement, in the Parifh of Deptford Strcnd'm the ' County of Kent, have for above two hundred Years lad: pad been a Corporation, and by long U.'age ' and by Virtue of divers Letters Patent granted to them by the Crown, been authorized and impowered ' to appoint Pilots, Loadfmen or Guides to conduct Ships and Veffels out of the Rivers of Thames and ' Adeaway through the North Chanel to or by Orfordnefs, and round the Long Sand-head into the Downs, ' and from and by Orfordnefs up the North Chanel and the Rivers of Thames and Medway, and alio to ' make fuch Orders and Conftitutions as Ihoukl be neceffary for the wholfome Government, Maintenance ' and Increafe of Navigation, and of all Seafaring Men coming or being within the River of Thames, and ' in Purfuance of fuch Powers and by ancient Ufage have, from Time to Time, appointed a competent ' Number of Pilots for the Purpofes before-mentioned, and made Orders, from Time to Time, for the

' noyances upon the faid River; but divers Perfons, without Examination, Licen&e or Authority by or ' from the laid Corporation, have taken upon themfelves to act as Pilots or Loadfmen, and to conduct ' and <mide Ships and VeiTels to and from the feveral Places aforefaid, to the great Hazard of fuch Ships ' and Veffels and their Cargoes, and the Lives of the Perfons on board the fame, and to the Obilruftion ' of Navigation within the faid Limits, and the Prejudice of lawful and licenfed Pilots, who attend wholly ' on that Service, and on which their Livelihood chiefly depends : And whereas great Loffes by Fire ' may happen to Merchants and Owners of Ships, occafioned by Powder being taken in and remain- ' ino- on board while Ships lie in the River of Thames, and by heating of Pitch, Tar, Rofin, Greafe, ' Tallow, Oil and other combuftible Matters and Tilings on board Ships and other Veffels lying in. ' the faid River: And whereas by the keeping Guns (hotted on board Ships lying in the faid River, and. ' by tiring Guns in the Night-time, not only the Ships lying in the faid River, but alfo his Majeity's ' Docks and Yards, and the Tower and City of London, and the Lives of divers Perfons, may be. ' greatly endangered : And whereas the Powers and Authorities veiled in the faid Corporation are: ' round not fufficicnt or effectual to remedy and prevent the Mifchiefs and ill Practices before mention- ' ed :' Therefore for promoting and fecuring a mere fafe Navigation for Ships and Veffels in the Ri- ver of Thames, and for the more effectual preventing and remedying the Dangers, Mifchiefs and Annoy- ances upon the faid River below London Bridge, Be it enacted by the King's moll Excellent Majeily, by and with the Advice and Ccnfent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this prefent Parliament afiembled, and by the Authority of the fame, That from and after the twenty-fourth Day Alter 24 June of June in the Year of our Lord one thouiand feven hundred and thirty-two, if any Perfon lhall take J ]3*» Sw^ upon himfelf the Charge of any Ship or VeiTel as Pilot down the River of Thames, or through the the Thames, &c._ North Chanel to or by Orfordnefs, or round the Long Sand-head into the Dozens-, or down the South Chanel withoutLicer.ee.. into the Deisms, or from or by Orfordnefs up the North Chapel, or the River of Thames, or the River ■ Medvoay, other than fuch Perfon as (hail be licenfed and authorized to act as a Pilot by the faid Ma- f:er, Wardens end Affiftants for the Time being, under the Common Seal of the Corporation,, every Perfon fo offending, and being thereof lawfully convicted before any Two or more of his Majeity's Ju- ftices of the Peace for the City of London, or the Counties of Middhfex, EJJ.x, Kent or Surrey*, or any of thein, within their refpective Jurifdiclions, in Manner herein after mentioned, (hall for every fuch Of- fence forfeit the Sum of twenty Pounds : Provided, That noihing in this Act -contained- (hail extend or Penalty 20I'. be conftrued to extend to the obliging of any Matter or Owner of' any Ship in the Coal Trade, or other ^° t j i t ^. s ext ^"' 1 10 Coaftirig Trade, to imploy or make ufe of any Pilot. And it is hereby further enacted by the Authority aforefaid, That no Mailer or Commander of Mo Gunpowder: any Ship or other VefTel whatsoever outward bound, (hall receive, or caufe or permit to be received on 5° ' ae .
