Preamble. 'TtTTHEREAS the making and keeping the River or Brook called Worjley Brook, in the County

' cafter, will be very beneficial to Trade, advantageous to the Poor, and convenient for the Carriage of ' Coals, Stone, Timber, and other Goods, Wares and Merchandizes, to and from the faid Places and ' Parts adjacent, and will very much tend to the Employing and Increafe of Watermen and Seamen, ' and be a Means to preferve the Highways ;' May it therefore pleafe your mod Excellent Majefty that it may be enacted, &c. " Undertakers appointed, with Power of doing any Thingneceffary for the Purpofes of this Act, at " their own Charge. Undertakers to make Satisfaction for Damages. Flood-gates for overflowing of " Grounds to be made. Commiffioners appointed for determining Differences. If Perfons decline fuch " Determination, and do not agree with the Undertakers, a Jury is to be impanelled to affefs Damages, " and the Commiffioners to give Judgment accordingly, which (hall be final. An A£t to impower the Juftices of the Peace for the County of Bucks, to raife Money to dis- charge the Debts incurred on account of building a Gaol and Court Rooms, and for finiuV ing the fame for the Ufe of the County. P R. 'HEREAS for Want of a convenient common Gaol for the County of Bucks (which is large and populous) a Houfe in the Town of Aylesbury, being a Market Town and fituate near the Middle of the faid County, was for many Years rented and ufed for that Purpofe, and the fame be- ' coming infufficient for the fafe keeping of Prifoners, the Grand Jury at the Affizes held for the faid ' County prefented the fame ; whereupon the Juftices of the Peace affembled at their General Quarter-Sef- ' fions agreed and ordered, That a Publick County Gaol fhould be built at Aylesbury aforefaid, and that the- ' faid Houfe fo rented and ufed, with the Ground and Soil thereto belonging, fhould be purchafed (being ' moft commodioufly and conveniently iituated for that Purpofe} and that a Gaol and Court Rooms or ' Shire Hall for the publick Service of the faid County fhould be thereon erected, which faid Houfe, ' Ground, and Soil have been purchafed accordingly, and the Freehold and Inheritance thereof has ' been conveyed toTruftees for the Ufe of the faid County, and in order for railing Money to pay for the ' the faid Purchafe, and alfo for defraying the neceffary Charges of fuch Buildings for the Purpofes afore-

  • faid, feveral Affeffments were made by the faid Juftices at their Quarter-Seffions, to be raifed and paid

' by the faid County, and a very confiderable Progrefs hath been made in fuch Buildings, but the

  • fame not having been perfected and finifhed, the faid Buildings have not only thereby fuftained great

' Damage, but the greateftPart thereof remains unferviceable : And whereas feveral Sums of Money

  • are juftly due to feveral Workmen, poor Labourers, and others who were employed in and furnifhed

' Materials for the faid Buildings, for Want of which Money they and their Families are much impo-

  • verifhed ; and a further Sum is alfo wanting, and neceffary to finilh and compleat the faid Buildings
  • for the Ufe and Accommodation of the faid County, all which Monies cannot be raifed without the

" Juftices of Peace, after 24 'June 1737, to make a General Affeftment in Com' Bucks, not ex- " ceeding 4^. in the Pound, to be collected by the Conftables.
