An Aft for furveying the Chief Ports and Head Lands on the Coafts of Great Britain and Ireland^ and the Iflands and Plantations thereto belonging, in order to the more exaft De- termination of the Longitude and Latitude thereof. WHEREAS by an Act of Parliament made in the twelfth Year of the Reign of her late Ma- jefty Queen Anne, intituled, An Ail for providing a Publick Reward for fuel Perfon or Perfons as Jliall dfcover the Longitude at Sea, the Commiffioners therein named, or any five or more of them, have full Power to hear and receive any Propofal or Propofals that (hall be made to them, for difcover- ing the faid Longitude ; and in cafe the faid Commiffioners, or any five or more of them, fhall be fo far fatisfied of the Probability of any fuch Difcovery, as to think proper to make Experiment thereof, they (hall certify the fame under their Hands and Seals to the Commiffioners of the Navy for the time being, together with the Perfons Names who are Authors of fuch Propofals ; and upon pro- ducing fuch Certificate, the faid Commiffioners are thereby authorized and required to make out a Bill or Bills for any Sum of Money, not exceeding two thoufand Pounds, as the faid Commiffioners for the Difcovery of the Longitude, or any Five or more of them, fhall think necefTary for making the Experiments, payable by the Treasurer of the Navy to fuch Perfon or Perfons as fhall be appointed by the Commiffioners for Difcovery of the Longitude, to make thofe Experiments : And for a due and fufficient Encouragement to any fuch Perfon or Perfons as (hall difcover a proper Method for find- ing the faid Longitude, it is thereby further enacted, That the Authors or Difcoverers of any fuch Method fhall be intitled to the refpective Sums therein mentioned, if it determines the faid Longitude according to the refpective Degrees of Exactnefs in the faid Act defcribed ; and that a Moiety of fuch Reward or Sum (hall be due and paid, when the faid Commiffioners, or the major Part of them, agree that fuch Method extends to the Security of Ships within eighty Geographical Miles of the Shores, which are Places of the greatefl Danger : And whereas it is abfolutely necefiary for ma- king fuch Difcovery ufeful at Sea, and for the Security of Ships approaching near the Shores, that the Chief Ports and Head Lands on the Coafts of Great Britain and Ire/and, and the Iflands and Plantations thereto belonging, (hould be firft furveyed, and the Longitude and Latitude of fuch Places determined more exactly than has hitherto been done : And whereas fome doubts have arifen, whether by the Words of the faid Act of Parliament the faid Sum of two thoufand Pounds appointed for making fuch Experiments, or any Part thereof, can be applied for fuch Survey, or fix- ing the Longitude or Latitude of fuch Places ;' Be it therefore enacted by the King's moft Excellent Majefty, by and with the Advice and Confent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this prefent Parliament affembled, and by the Authority of the fame, That the faid Commiffion- ers for difcovering the Longitude, or any five or more of them, fhall have full Power to apply fuch Part of the faid Sum of two thoufand Pounds mentioned in the faid Act, as has not already been laid out in Experiments, as they fhall think necefiary, for the making fuch Survey, and determining the Longitude and Latitude of the Chief Ports and Head Lands, on the Coafts of Great Britain and Ire- land, and the Iflands and Plantations thereto belonging ; and that fuch Sum or Sums, Part of the faid two thoufand Pounds, which the faid Commiffioners, or any five or more of them fhall think necefiary,' fhall be paid immediately by the Treafurer of the Navy, to fuch Perfon or Perfons as fhall be appointed by the (aid Commiffioners for the Difcovery of the Longitude, to make fuch Survey, and determine fuch Longitude and Latitude, out of the Money that fhall be in the Hands of fuch Treafurer, unap-
