In ancient times, in Scotland. the people believed, that by repeating the following lines both their perſons and houſes would be preſerved from the power of witches and evil spirits.
Wha fains the houſe the night?
They that fains it ilka night:
Saint Bryde and her brate,
Saint Colme and his hat;
Saint Michael and his ſpear,
Keep this houſe frae the weir.
A country.man in Eaſt Lothian, ſaid the following words always before he began to take any meat.
Lord be bleſs'd for all his gifts,
Defy the Devil and all his ſhifts.
God ſend me more ſiller:
And meat may I want never.
