CHAP. VII.

An Act for the Encouragement of the Militia and Voluntiers employes in proſecuting the preſent Indian War.

Preamble.I.WHEREAS the vigorous Proſecution of the preſent Indian War may much ſooner put an End to the ſame: In order therefore to encourage and ſtir up an enterprizing Spirit among the Militia and Voluntiers employed in the ſaid War;

Premiums for Indian Priſoners, & Scalps, taken by Perſons in the State Service.II. BE it Enacted, by the General Aſſembly of the State of North Carolina, and by the Authority of the ſame, That from and after the Firſt Day of June next, if Peace ſhall not be made with the Cherokees before that Time, and until Peace ſhall be made, a Premium of Fifteen Pounds for each Priſoner, and a Premium of Ten Pounds for each Scalp, ſhall be paid out of the Treaſury to the Captor, being in the Service of the State, on producing a Priſoner or Scalp, and making Oath that the Priſoner was taken by him after the ſaid Firſt Day of June, or that the Scalp was taken and fleaed off the Head of an Indian Man ſlain by himſelf, after the ſaid Firſt Day of June.

Premiums to Perſons not in the Service.III. AND be it Enacted, by the Authority aforeſaid, That a Premium or Reward of Forty Pounds for each Scalp of an Indian Man Priſoner, be paid to any Perſon in this State, not in the Pay thereof, who ſhall voluntarily undertake to make War upon the ſaid Indians after the Time aforeſaid, provided Peace ſhall not before that Time be made with the ſame Indians, and until Peace ſhall be made; the Captors making Oath as aforeſaid that ſuch Scalp or Priſoner was taken by him after the ſaid Firſt Day of June, and that the Indian ſo killed or taken is of the Nation of Indians commonly known by the Name of the Cherokees, and that the Scalp produced was actually taken from an Indian, killed by the Perſon claiming the ſame.


CHAP. VIII.

An Act for the Appointment of Regiſters in the ſeveral Counties in this State.

Preamble.I.WHEREAS it is abſolutely neceſſary for the recording and preſerving Deeds, that Regiſters be appointed in the ſeveral Counties within this State;

Regiſters appointed.II. BE it Enacted, by the General Aſſembly of the State of North-Carolina, and by the Authority of the ſame, That the Juſtices of the ſeveral Counties, and the Diſtrict of Waſhington, in this State, have full Power, and are hereby required, at the firſt Court held in their ſeveral Counties, and on the ſecond Day of ſuch Court, to nominate and appoint ſome proper Perſon within their reſpective Counties to be a Regiſter for the ſame, who ſhall enjoy the ſaid Office during good Behaviour.

To give Bond.III. AND be it further Enacted, That each Public Regiſter ſo choſen, ſhall within Three Months after he ſhall enter his Office, give Bond,
