MOTHER-BORN.

Since fate hath given thee no child
To lie within thine arm,
That by its presence undefiled
Should keep thy soul from harm,

If thou wert truly mother-born
Thou would'st have played the part,
And found some little one forlorn
To fold within thy heart.
