We are indebted to the representatives of the late Robert Louis Stevenson for permission to print the following account of his stay at Le Monastier in the autumn of 1878. It was intended to serve as the opening chapter of his well-known volume, Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes; but the intention was abandoned in favour of a more abrupt beginning, and the fragment is now printed for the first time.
