PREFACE. IT is believed that no previous attempt has been made to present a connected biographical account of the Heir- Apparent and his Consort. The writer of this work desires to acknowledge considerable indebtedness to Canon Dalton's " Cruise of H.M.S. Bacchante" and to Mr. Kinloch Cooke's authorised life of the late Duchess of Teck. Various memoirs and diaries have also been consulted, including Mr. A. C. Benson's life of his father, the late Archbishop of Canterbury.
