Section I. — Deſcription of the Ordinary Puniſments.

THE lowest degree of puniſhment is a moderate correction inflicted with the leſſer bamboo, in order that the tranſgreſſor of the law may entertain a ſenſe of ſhame for his paſt, and receive a ſalutary admonition with reſpect to his future, conduct. Of this ſpecies of puniſment there are five degrees:

The firſt nominally a
puniſhment of
10 blows, of which only 4 blows are to be
inflicted.
The ſecond 20 blows, 5 blows
The third 30 blows, 10 blows
The fourth 40 blows, 15 blows
The fifth 50 blows, 20 blows

The ſecond degree, or diviſion of puniſhment, is inflicted with the larger bamboo, and is ſubdivided in the following manner:
