NOTE ON PRONUNCIATION OF PROPER NAMES

In order to avoid some of the difficulties of transliteration the Croatian alphabet has been generally used throughout the book.

š = English sh as in ship
č = English ch as in chill
ž = French j as in jour
dž = English j as in James
ć = English ty as in Luttyens
c = English ts as in rats
j = English y as in yes

Examples: Šarac; Jabučilo; Samodreža; Kesedžija.
