THE PLOVERS.

We come now to the Fifth Order of birds, namely,

the Grallatores. Grallator means one who goes on stilts, and this Order includes all those long-shanked birds which bare their legs and walk about in shallow waters, and also many which do not go into water but walk upon dry ground on stilts.
