Ill, to liis s., Edmund (Plantagenet), Earl of Lancaster, but (quickly altering his mind, perhaps owing to the death of the young Earl of Albemarle) granted, in the same year to the same son, the marriage of Aveiina, her da., the heiress of the family. — See note by Sir C. She d. s.p. aud v.f. before 1269, and was bur. in the Abbey of Meaux. (o) It is not improbable that this was a foreign title, i.e., a Norman Dukedom, just as was the Earldom of Eu, in Normandy, cr. about thirty years later by Hen. V in behalf of William Bourchier. This supposition is strengthened by the fact of the subsequent creation in 1397 being before this creation of 1385 (if, indeed, it was an English hereditary Peerage) was ex.
