He was a staunch loyalist, and commanded the forces in Minister against Cromwell, being in 1638 rewarded (shortly before the Restoration) with the Earldom of Clanoarty as abovestated. He m. Eleanor, sister of James, 1st Duke OF Ormonde, da. of Thomas Butler, styled Viscount ThUkles, by Elizabeth, da. of Sir John Poyntz. He d. in London, Aug. 1665( b ). [Charles Maccarty, s. and h. ap. in 1G62, was sum. to the House of Lords [I.] in his Father's Viscnuntcy as VISCOUNT MUSKERRY.( C ) He m. Margaret, only da. and h. of Uliek (nE Burgh), Marquess of ClanriCarde [I.] and 2d K.hl of St. A5.b, s. He d. v.p. being slain 3 June, 1665, on board " the Hoyal Charles " in a sea fight against the Dutch, and was bur. 22 at Westm. Abbey( d ). He was formerly a Monk in France, but, on his accession to the title, conformed to the established religion. He in. Sir William Davis, Chief Justice of the King's Bench [I.], who d. 24 Sep,, 1687. She d. in Dublin Feb. 1697/8. Her will, &c, dat. 4 and 5 Feb., 1697/8, pr. 12 May, 1698, and 20 June, 1700. [)act] his son Teig with the Barony of Valentia," but this is contradicted by the patent. The effect, however, would be the same as to style of Teig, who would be styled " Lord Valentia " in each case. ( a ) His son-in-law, Florence Maccarty, sue. bim and assumed the style of " Tlic Maccarty More. " ( b ) Donogh, Earl of Clancarty, and Ins s. and h. ap. Charles, Viscount Muskerry (so sum. v.p. in 1662) were, in 1663, among the Irish Roman Catholics who remonstrated with the King. See a list of these, ante , p. 1 49. note " &." ( c ) He was one of the few heirs apparent of an Irish Peerage (but nine in all) who were, in their father's lifetime, sum. to Pari, in one of their Father's peerages. The fnct of it being a Viscmintei/, in this case, instead of a Barony, is remarkable. See a list of these, Vol. i, p. 2, note " a." ( d ) James (Ley), 3d Earl of Marlborough, Charles (Berkeley) Earl of Falmouth, and Sir Edward Broughton, perished at the same time and were similarly buried. See Chester's " Westm. Abbey Registers."
