[Richard Charles Mea.de, styled Loud Gillfoud, 1st s. and h. ap. b. 10 June, 186S ; entered the Royal Navy, 1SS1.] Family Estates.— These, in 18S3, consisted of 3,584 acres in eo. I 16G2 Clare, 3d and yst s. of Connor (O'Brien), 3d Eari, OP Thomoxd [!•]. u >' hi 8 W Wife, Ownye, da. of Turlogh Mac-1-BrikN-Ara, was Capt. of a Reg. in the time of Queen Eliz., was Knighted at Lexlipp, 1 July 1 (104 ; M.P. for co. Clare in the time of James I and Charles I, retiring from the pari, of 1039, to take his place in the confederation of Kilkenny. He dii great service to the King during the rebellion of 1641, and was at the 'Age of 80 or upwards, 11 July, 1662, BARON MOYARTA AND VISCOUNT CLARE [or O'BRIEN OF CLARE], eo. Clare [I.] His estates, to the extent of 84,339 acres, ehielly in co. Clare, (winch had been eontiseated) wore restored to him without reprisals. He m., shortly after 1600, Catharine, Dow. Viscountess Fkkmoy [I ], da. ef Gerald Fitz James (Fitz-Gekai.d), Eabi ok Desmond [I.] by his 2d wife Eleanor, da. of Edmund (BuTLKR), L.vuon Dundoyne [1.] He d. about 1664. II. 1664 ? 2. Connor (O'Brien), Viscount Clare, &c. [XJ, 2d but 1st surv. b. and h., 6. about 1(505. He m. Honora, da. of Daniel O'BitiEN of Duagh. He rf. about 1670. I1L 1670? o. Daniel (O'Brien), Viscount Clare, &c. [I.] s. and to h., who was in attendance on Charles II during his exile, and thro' 1691. whose influence the peerage for his Grandfather was obtained. He was, like him, devoted to the Royal cause, and raised, for James II, in Ireland, in 1 6S9, two Regiments of Infantry, and one of Dragoons which was considered "the flower of James' army,'" but was, on 26 July, 16S9, "cut almost to pieces" near Lisnaskea( h ) ; P.C., 16S4 ; Lieut, of co. Clare. He fought at the battle of the Boyne, 1 July, 1690. He m. Philadelphia, sister of Thomas, 1st Earl op Sussex, da. of Francis (Lennard), Lord Dache, by Elizabeth, da. of Paul (Bayn- ino), 1st Viscount Bayning of Sudbury. Shed 1662. He was outlawed 11 May, 1691, whereby his estates(°) and title became forfeited. He appears to have d. that same year. (*) The preamble to the patent is in " Lodge " II., p. 82, note ; " This promotion was caused by the interest felt by the King in the younger Daniel the grandson [and successor] of the new Peer, who hail not staid at home, but ventured life and fortune iu foreign service for the sake of his exiled Sovereign."
