CLEVELAND. 287 b. 27 July 1766 and bap. 18 Aug. at St. James, Westm. ; matric. at Oxford (Oh. CU.), 25 April 17S3 ; was M.P. tor Totness, 1788-90 ; for Winehelsea, 1790-92 ;• being then sti/lai Viscount Barnard. On 8 Sep. 1792 he sue. his Father as Earl ok Darlinqton, &c, was R keen sportsman and Master of the Fox Hounds ; Col. of the Durham Militia, 1792, and Col. in the Army (during service), 1794 ; Lord Lieut, of co. Durham, 1793. He was, though the owner of 6 borough seats (viz., 2 for Ilchester, 2 for Camelford, and 2 for Winehelsea), a zealous supporter of Reform, and was, accordingly, in 1827 (under the Ministry of Viscount Goderich), and in 1833 (under that of Earl Grey), cr. a Marquess and a Dixkc, as above. Was bearer of the 3rd Sword at the coronation of William IV, S Sep. 1881. K.G-, 17 April 1839. He m. firstly, 17 Sep. 17S7, his maternal cousin, Katharine, 2nd da. and coheir of Harry (Powi.ktt), 0th and last DUKE of Bolton, by his 2nd wife, Katharine, sister of James, Eahloe Lonsdale, and da. of Robert LowtheR abovemeutioued. She, who was b. 1768, d. 17 June 1807. He m. secondly, 27 July 1818, at his house in St. James' Square (St. James' Westm.), Elizabeth KrssELL, of Newton House, in Burmiston, Co. York, spinster. He d. 29 Jany. 1812. aged 75, in St. James' Sq. Will pr. April 1842. He was said (besides estates) to have left £1,250,00(1 in consols, and about £1.000,000 worth of plate and jewels. M.P. for Saltash, 1SS0-31 ; and for South Salop, 1832-42, being then styled Earl of Darlington. In 1815 lie joined the Army, was Lieut.-Col. 75th Foot in 1824, and finally, General in the Army, 1S63. K.G., 11 April 1S42 ; Col. of the Durham Militia, 1842. He m. 16 Nov. 1809, Sopliia, da. of John (PovLett), 4th Eaki. Povjlett, by his 1st wife Sophia, da. and h. of Admiral Sir George PocoCK, K.B. She, who was 0. 16 March 1785, d. 9 Jany. 1859, aged 73, at Itaby Castle. He d, there, s.p., IS Jany. 1864. Will pr. 3 March ISO 1, under £800,000. Marquessate. III. By royal lie.. 14 April 1813, lie took the surname of Powlett in lieu of that of Vane, under the will of his maternal grandmother, the Duchess of Bolton. M.P. for Winehelsea, 1812-15 ; for co. Shortly after his succession to the Dukedom, he, by roy. lie, 4 March 1S64, resumed his patronymic of Vmti He m. 3 July 1815, Grace Caroline, 5th da. of William (Lowther), Earl of Lonsdale, by Augusta, da. of Johu (Fane), 9th Emu, of Westmorland. He d. s.p. at Itaby Castle, 6 Sep. 1861, in his 73rd year, and was bur. 13th in St. Mary's, Stain- cross, Durham. Will pr. 29 Oct, 1864 under £180,000. His widow, who was *. 17 Feb. 1792, d. 1 Nov. 1833, aged 91, at Osterley Tark, Midx. Will pr. 31 Dec. 1S83, over £434,000. Marquessate. IV.
